Come On You… Hats

From the Fitted Hat Files

I’ve watched a grand total of maybe seven minutes of English Premier League soccer in my life, but I’d like to get into it a little more, so I decided to take on Tottenham Hotspur as my team because of their connection to Jewish London.

From what I understand, cheering for the Spurs is like cheering for the Cubs… torture with the occasional glimpse of hope! Of course I couldn’t have just picked Manchester United or City and made my fandom easy, but those teams mean nothing to me.

The Spurs play in North London, which is home to a large population of Jewish Londoners. As such, the Jewish community of that city traditionally supported Tottenham, and although it apparently doesn’t have an especially disproportionate amount of Jewish fans than any other club today, the team is still often referred to affectionately and/or pejoratively as the “Yids” or the “Jews”.

That, combined with the fact that I think the Spurs’ cockerel logo is one of the best insignias in all of pro sports on the entire planet, has made me a Spurs fan.

So with that, I say: COME ON YOU SPURS!

About the hat

As you might imagine, baseball caps aren’t exactly a core element of European soccer fandom, so this one was a bit tough to find. I snagged it from the Lids.com site in the US and had it shipped up to Canada. I’m always keeping an eye out for more Hotspurs fitteds, so hopefully my collection of Tottenham caps will grow!
